Oscar Wilde once said: “Be yourself because everyone else is already taken.” Miss BC has taught me the absolute importance of accepting yourself and embracing your qualities, even the ones you aren’t proud of.

As a kid, I hated putting myself on display. I resided comfortably in a state of complete cower from large crowds and photos. It was only fate that I was to throw myself into the spotlight, into an abyss of vulnerability. I put myself out there, and I wasn’t afraid to be judged. This was the first time I truly accepted myself.

What followed was a year of realization of who I am. I learned my strengths and weaknesses. My title gave a platform to exhibit my strengths, and to educate others who have the same weaknesses as me.

These past few months, I have been planning a workshop for preteen girls to heighten their self-confidence and self-esteem. I want other young women to feel the confidence I have obtained from this past year. With this workshop, I want to spread body positivity and acceptance of who one is.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Miss BC. Because of their organization, I have become comfortable with myself. I have also learned to help others do the same.
